Top 10 Start Ups to Watch

March 27, 2007, Byte and Switch

Solix Technologies makes it onto the list by targeting a corner of the archiving market that looks set to explode during the coming months. The software vendor, which develops products for handling structured data, seems well positioned to cope with the compliance demands on ever-growing customer databases. (See Tellabs Nabs Ocular, Solix Integrates With EMC Centera, and Packing It In.)

Hewlett-Packard led the charge of major storage vendors into database archiving when it acquired OuterBay in February 2006, but Solix, along with Applimation and Princeton Softech, is still very much in the game. (See HP Hops on OuterBay, Wipro Resells Solix, and Users Pick Princeton Softech.)

With so many parts of the storage market mature to the point of vendor saturation, this is one area where there is still everything to play for. "The archiving space has generally taken off -- look at email archiving, and unstructured data archiving, but what hasn't taken off is structured archiving," says Simon Robinson, an analyst at the 451 Group.

Compliance Management & FRCP Rule Amendments: The IT Perspective

By Sai Gundavelli,
March 9, 2007 DMReview

CIOs are faced with multitude regulatory requirements in regards to enterprise data, such as Graham-Leach-Bliley, Sarbanes-Oxley, HIPAA, the Patriot Act and Basel II. If you carefully analyze each of these requirements from IT perspective, they broadly fall into following two categories: data retention and data auditing.

Before I discuss those, let's first define data. All data that is created or used in an organization, be it an email, an instant message or a document, constitutes a business record for the organization.

Active Archiving Helps Solve Application Performance Management Challenges

By Julie Lockner
February 16, 2007, DMReview

One of the biggest challenges facing a corporate IT support team once an application "goes live" is the daunting task of maintaining application performance service level agreements (SLAs). As data volumes and number of users accessing the systems grow, performance can be adversely impacted.

Application performance can be affected by many factors, including: database size, server and infrastructure class, number of users accessing the application and the quality of the application code. Most application support teams, developers and database administrators will say that most of their time is spent reactively responding to performance issues as opposed to other support and maintenance issues. Data classification begins to mature

By Michelle Hope
February 2, 2007, Infostor

When we profiled data-classification practices last year we found many storage professionals using data-classification products to discover what was taking up so much space on their G: drives. More often than not, they were surprised by what they found: Terabytes of data that hadn't been accessed in more than a year or sensitive, highly regulated customer information (e.g., credit card numbers, social security numbers, etc.) that had somehow made its way into various Office documents or flat files housed throughout their network.

We then asked these users what they planned to do with the data they had found. This is where many admitted they weren't quite sure how best to move forward. Although they universally acknowledged the importance of data classification in such larger initiatives as information lifecycle management (ILM), tiered storage, and archiving, many users seemed to still be feeling their way through their organization's political hierarchy when it came to progressing past the discovery phase. Solix integrates archiving solution with Oracle

December 1, 2006, Infostor

Solix Technologies has integrated a “non-trigger-based” version of its ARCHIVE-jinni active archiving solution with Oracle’s E-Business Suite. Triggers are procedural codes that can add complexity and overhead to a database, which could potentially degrade system performance and reliability.

Users can archive Oracle E-Business Suite database tables to an active archive database to improve system performance, while maintaining transactional referential integrity and transparent access to the archived data for end users. Oracle has certified the solution through the Oracle Application Integration Initiative.

Saving the Data

By Chris Preimesberger
, eweek

U.S. businesses are going to have to change the way they handle electronically stored information when new federal rules go into effect Dec. 1.

The new regulations, adopted by the U.S. Supreme Court in April, say businesses must be able to quickly find such data when required by the federal court.

That means that every electronic document stored by businesses—e-mail, instant messages, financials, voice mail and all text and graphical documents—must be easily retrievable.

Content Classifiers Glom Onto Google

October 23, 2006, Byte and Switch

A growing roster of companies specializing in data classification and search are looking to Google to help them enhance their wares -- and vice versa. The results could boost IT pros' ability to find and manage stored information -- as long as the suppliers follow through.

Today, for instance, startup Mathon Systems unveiled plans to integrate its data forensics software with Google's Search Appliance, as part of Google's Enterprise Professional Program.

Mathon's software, called Integral, runs on x86 Windows or Linux servers to locate more than 250 metadata items in content situated on other servers and NAS arrays. This metadata is used to audit, classify, and control images, spreadsheets, and a range of other documents. For example, an audit trail is set up to include details about the location of documents, who has worked on them, and when. Policies can be set up to obtain data, to issue reports on it, and to control access to it. ( read more...)

Does brand matter?

October 9, 2006, Express Computer Online

The power of an organisational brand is indisputable in any area of business, including attracting the right talent. It is the big boys who dominate the recruitment market and are too formidable a force to reckon with for organisations which do not have a brand name to boast of. The big companies offer a plethora of allurements in the form of a structured career path, training programmes, more job security, a corporate working environment, opportunities for going abroad, et al. Then why should anyone ever consider working for a small setup? The answer narrows down to three primary reasons—more challenges, an innovative atmosphere and creating one’s identity in the company. The Metadata Mystique: Exposing the Realities of Effective Metadata Management for ILM

By Sandhya Ganesan and Dinendra Joshi
September 29, 2006, DM Direct Newsletter (Print)

When you talk to people about metadata and why anyone should care about it, you get varied feedback. For some, while it makes sense in theory, in practice there is not enough reason for it. Others who want to do it either don't know how or just don't have the time to do it right.

Gone are the days when talking about metadata was just trendy and modern. In today's enterprise IT scenario, considering the staggering volumes of accumulated data, their exponential growth rates and the vast diversity of data sources, having a proper metadata process has become inevitable. It is only natural that vastly heterogeneous data types and sources would lead to an equally heterogeneous array of metadata types and sources. Nevertheless, companies are already feeling threatened by the idea of maintaining these metadata silos, which could prevent them from realizing the full benefit of their investments. Now is the time for IT thought leaders to adopt best practices for metadata capture and management so enterprise application metadata can be stored and managed centrally. (read more...)

ILM Strategy has to be a company-wide initiave

September 7, 2006, CXO Today

A CIO must rally support and commitment of all the senior management and ensure cooperation from business leaders across different departments before charting an ILM strategy. Shekhar Dasgupta, President & COO, Solix Technologies talks to Rajendra Chaudhary about ILM

How do you view the adoption of ILM in India?

If we break ILM adoption to the three broad categories of Active Archiving - Database Archiving, File/ HSM Archiving and Email Archiving, then Gartner's assessment of this market worldwide is that we will see mainstream adoption of all three in 5-10 years' time.

The first two, are in the 'technology trigger' phase as per Gartner (Ref: Hype Cycle for Storage Software Technologies, 2006). This being an emerging market worldwide, India will be no different given that both ERP and email are becoming mainstream adoption in India. (read more...)
